About SCbio

Building the business of life sciences

SCbio is a statewide, non-profit, industry association and economic development organization tasked with building the business of life sciences in South Carolina’s life sciences industry. 

SCbio serves as official state affiliate of BIO — the U.S. Biotechnology Innovation Organization — and of PhRMA — the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, as well as AdvaMed — the Advanced Medical Technology Association.  

In serving  as both advocate for and ‘voice’ of SC life sciences, SCbio champions the people, advances and organizations of the industry which provide better healthcare, improved quality of life, enhanced agriculture, and a cleaner and safer environment for us all.

To promote growth, SCbio has 5 areas of focus:

  • Workforce – Ensure a quality pipeline of talent to fill needs of new and expanding companies  
  • Policy – Advocate to become the most business-friendly state for life sciences companies by improved policies and creation of incentives to attract high-paying life science jobs
  • Marketing – Ensure decision-makers are aware of the state’s story and opportunities, and connect and convene industry leaders regularly across the ecosystem
  • Entrepreneurship – Successfully grow early-stage companies and encourage creation of new startups to increase the pipeline and help current startups improve odds of success
  • Business Development – Recruit more life sciences companies by identifying companies, building relationships, and serving as subject expert on visits and during recruitment

SCbio Foundation

The purpose of the SCbio Foundation is to help advance South Carolina’s life sciences industry through high-impact initiatives focused around research, education, talent development and retention, and innovation.

Tamia Sumpter

Tamia is a driven senior undergraduate Bioengineering student currently enrolled at Clemson University. With a strong foundation in her field, she has honed her skills through hands-on experience in research and development at Eli Lilly & Company. During her time in the ADME department, Tamia contributed significantly by working on siRNAs and their applications in finding In Vitro-In Vivo Correlation (IVIVC). Looking ahead, Tamia has set her sights on a promising career in law. She aspires to specialize in Intellectual Property Law, with a particular focus on serving as in-house counsel for leading medical device or pharmaceutical companies. Her enthusiasm for this role is palpable as she prepares to embark on her legal journey! She is also a proud member of the Omicron Phi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., PEER Mentor for Clemson PEER/WiSE, and currently serves as the President of Clemson Bioengineering Organization (CBO). With her unique blend of scientific knowledge and legal interests, Tamia is poised to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare and life sciences industries.
